Did you know? Interesting Speechie Factoids…

Here’s a little speechie trivia… I love this stuff!

The left hemisphere of your brain has  about 186 million more neurons than the right hemisphere. Gotta be all those “language neurons” .

Symbolic language first appeared 2.5 million years ago. Wow. I wonder what those conversations were like? “I’m hungry, what’s for dinner?” “Are we there yet?”

Speaking requires the coordination of over 100 muscles. Just an articulation issue? It’s more complicated than that!

The average speaking rate is 15 sounds per second. (I have a few students who can definitely surpass this one!)

There are about 6000 modern languages. (I know about 1 1/4 of them.)

A young baby will babble almost every sound of every known language.  Later on, she will lose the ability to say the sounds she doesn’t hear spoken in her language… this is an example of neural pruning.
It’s so neat how some version of “mama” seems to be one of the earliest words spoken wordwide! Of course the /m/ is early and easy to produce.

In humans, the left side of the brain controls speech. In birds, the left side of the brain controls song. Does this mean that humans are “bird brained?”
