Why address irregular verb tense early? Which verbs to teach first?

Written irregular verb forms are typically taught in school in 2nd grade and beyond. However, the development of the verbal use of irregular past-tense verbs begins earlier and is important for developing expressive language skills which are the building blocks for written language.

Roger Brown’s Stages framework (Brown, 1973) indicates that irregular verb forms emerge early between 25-46 months of age.

I’ve used the developmental sequence identified by Shipley, Maddox & Driver, 1991. Shipley et. al looked at the age of mastery of 49 irregular past-tense verbs and found that while many irregular past-tense verbs developed early, others were still not mastered by the age of 9.
